Scope and content

Twelve books used in Emanuel Hospital's RN Nursing School program, late 1930s to early 1940s. 1970-71 and 1972-73 Good Samaritan School of Nursing yearbooks. 1981-83 catalog for Good Samaritan School of Nursing. One photo of Emanuel Hospital Nursing School Class of 1943. Two newspaper clippings. Emanuel Hospital Alumni Notes, spanning 1987-2003. One antique typewriter: c. 1910 Oliver No. 5 Bat-Wing Design typewriter, with cover and parts. Cover is not attached to machine.
Books involve multiple subjects presented from a nursing perspective, including history, chemistry, psychiatry, interpersonal relations, and pathology. Also included are practical and procedural details related to working as a nurse and an introduction to shorthand.
Books are annotated by Edith Golik. Annotations include underlined passages and notes in the margins. Notes add detail to existing text and mark out passages to remember for Golik’s schoolwork.
Newspaper clippings were found in A Textbook of Medical Diseases for Nurses Including Nursing Care by Arthur A. Stevens and Florence Anna Ambler. “‘Wonder Drug’ Blamed for Deaths, Illness” was inside the front cover, and “Cobra (Naja Venom Solution, H. W. & D.” was on page 454, but both are now stored in a separate folder.
The contents of the collection include twelve textbooks, three yearbooks/catalogs, three folders, and one antique typewriter with parts.
