General note
Summary: This collection mainly consists of paper documents collected throughout Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds’ professional career at Linfield College. The collection includes drafts of
Dr. Dirks-Edmunds’ doctoral thesis and other scientific papers, lecture notes and student
work, data and collection tabulations records from her research on Saddleback Mountain,
professional correspondence with other scientists and research articles. The collection
also contains a few personal artifacts from Dr. Dirks-Edmunds’ life and some
photographs of her and her research station on Saddleback Mountain.
General note
Biographical Note: Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds devoted 50 years of her life to studying the Douglas-Fir trees along Oregon’s coastline; hers is the most comprehensive ecological study in the Northwest. Dr. Dirks-Edmunds was first introduced to the forest of Saddleback Mountain in 1933 during her sophomore year at Linfield College. Her biology professor and
academic advisor, Dr. James A. Macnab, was conducting a study of the Saddleback forest
community, and Dr. Dirks-Edmunds assisted him with the project for three-and-a-half
years before adopting the research site for her own.
