Elam J. Anderson (1932-1938) - Linfield’s thirteenth president, born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1890 and died in 1944. Before his time at Linfield, Anderson spent over a decade teaching in China. As president, Anderson sought to expand Linfield education to include general education courses in students’ first two years to guarantee well-rounded students. Additionally, he saw the construction of three new dormitories and the Northup Library. Anderson’s efforts to improve Linfield were well received and amounted to Linfield appearing on the “approved list” of the American Association of Universities. Anderson held a degree from Drake University, attended graduate school at Cornell University, and received a doctorate in education from the University of Chicago.
