George C. Chandler (1857-1860) - Linfield’s first president, born in 1807 in Chester, Vermont. Chandler was a pioneer in Oregon, first emigrating in 1851 to pursue missionary work. He was persuaded to become the president of Oregon City College, a partial predecessor to Linfield founded in 1849 by the Baptist church, predominantly focusing on primary education - which did not satisfy Chandler's academic pursuits, so he quickly stepped down. The school closed soon after in 1858, giving all assets to McMinnville College. The same year, Chandler stepped into the role of president of Linfield, excited by the potential to teach higher levels of education. Chandler was noted for doing “whatever the day required” to keep the college operating. Chandler received his education from Hamilton Literary & Theological Institution, now Colgate University, and attended seminary at Newton Theological Institution.
