Scope and content

Harry L. Dillin (1943-1968) - Linfield’s fifteenth president, born in St. Lawrence County, New York, in 1906. Dillin was one of Linfield’s longest-tenured presidents, and he started his term amidst low enrollment and global wartime. Before his presidency, Dillin was a faculty member in Economics and Mathematics, treasurer for the student government, and the “watchdog” for Linfield’s investment portfolio. As president, Dillin is noted for the development of many of Linfield’s academic and resident halls, and at the end of the war - he brought on a “key generation” of staff and faculty. On the other hand, he is recognized for a period of religious fervor that led to the dismissal of several faculty members, as they were more modernist than the Baptist church could tolerate. Dillin received his Bachelor’s degree from St. Stephens College, now called Bard College. He received his Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina and was granted an honorary doctorate from the University of Redlands.
