Scope and content

Mark Bailey (1873-1876) - Linfield’s fourth president, born in 1822 in Sterling, Massachusetts, and passed in 1904. Bailey was known to have strong beliefs in Christian education and would end each day with a prayer for the college students. Bailey spent many years working in higher education, as he taught at Denison, Franklin, and the College of California, the predecessor for the University of California. He also had a hand in Linfield’s near financial ruin in the late 1800s, as the school owed him nearly $1,000 of his presidential salary by the time he resigned, which is over $26,000 in today’s value. This did not hinder him from continuing his work in education, as he went on to be one of the first faculty members of the University of Oregon, then named Oregon State University. President Bailey received his education from Brown University in Rhode Island.
