Scope and content
Truman G. Brownson (1887-1896) - Linfield’s ninth president, born in 1851 in New York. During his tenure, President Brownson focused much of his energy on bringing the college to a satisfactory academic level, even shortening the length of studies to allocate resources and time best. Beyond academics, Brownson made a point to align the Baptist College with the Baptist beliefs the school was founded on, creating the first required bible studies courses. He also attempted to relocate the college, with Portland being the leading contender. Additionally, Brownson was the president when the campus publication, The Review, was created and even acted as the editor. Brownson completed his undergraduate studies at Madison University, now known as Colgate University and his Theological studies at Union Theological Seminary in Chicago. He died in 1928 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
