Scope and content
William G. Everson (1938-1943) - Linfield’s fourteenth president, born in 1879 in Wooster, Ohio, and died in 1954. Before his time as president, Everson was a member of the United States Army, achieving a Major General rank after serving in both the Spanish-American War and World War I. He was chosen as president in part to heal a rift between Linfield and the Baptist Convention since he also worked as a pastor. However, the dispute was not solved during his time, as he was not extreme in modernist or conservative beliefs. Everson’s presidency was struck by the approach of World War II, which took a toll on enrollment as many students, faculty, and trustees left for war. Everson held a Bachelor’s degree from Franklin College, a graduate degree from Newton Theological Seminary, and was granted an honorary doctorate in Divinity from Franklin College.
