This collection contains a unique comprehensive representation of the evolution of Amity Vineyards and the history of the Oregon wine industry. The collection encompasses the day-to-day functionalities of Amity Vineyards, including business correspondence, marketing strategies, laboratory information and personal memorabilia. In addition to focusing on Amity Vineyard’s 40-year evolution, this collection also encompasses the unique perspective on the development of the Oregon wine industry through various publications, documentation of various Oregon wine organizations, as well as through local, regional and international wine events hosted by or featuring various Oregon wineries.

This collection is in five series which contains a total of 223 boxes. Series 1. Business, 1970-2011. Series 2. Harvest and Vineyard Information, 1974-2008. Series 3. Organizations, 1977-2008. Series 4. Publicaitons, 1966-20007. Series 5. Awards, Memorabilia, and Wine Bottles, 1977-2009.

Oregon Wine Board Collection

This collection is comprised of documents and artifacts covering Amity Vineyards and winery information. This includes vineyard and harvest records, business documentation, representative material from various wine-affiliated organizations, published books, newspapers, magazine articles and research papers. The collection provides researchers with a wide representation of the Oregon wine industry in addition to documentation and published works regarding wineries and vineyard owners from around the world. Biographical note: Amity Vineyards was established in 1974 by president and winemaker Myron Redford. The vineyard lies just outside of the Amity city limits. After purchasing the vineyard from Jerry Preston and planting his first cuttings, Redford played various influential roles in Oregon’s budding wine industry. He was involved in organizations such as the Viticulture Committee, the Oregon Winegrowers Association and the Oregon Wine Board, various winemaking panels, and he has played a pivotal role in the development of wine industry workshop events such as The Steamboat Conference and International Pinot Noir Celebration (IPNC). In addition to holding leadership positions in Oregon wine groups, Redford collaborated extensively with other early winemakers to draft Oregon wine’s grape tax and property protection legislation.

In 1983, through the Wine Advisory Board (now the Oregon Wine Board), Redford and other pioneer winemakers were able to create and pass House Bill 2939, a bill that enforced a grape tax predominantly on large Oregon wineries in order to fund wine research. This tax has been essential to fund programs promoting the improvement of practices and general understanding of viticulture and enology in Oregon.

In 2014, Myron Redford sold Amity Vineyards to Union Wine Company, a local Oregon craft winery which operates under the labels “Underwood”, “Kings Ridge”, and “Alchemist.”
