General note
Summary: The Southern Oregon Wine Institute (SOWI) collection provides a history from the beginnings of the institution in 2008 to the addition to the new Danny Lang Teaching, Learning, and Event Center in 2012. It includes information on the institution’s positive effect on the Oregon Wine industry, published studies and academic papers from the college, as well as published articles promoting the Oregon Wine Industry itself.
General note
Historical Note: In 2008, the Southern Oregon Wine Institute (SOWI) was established at Umqua Community College (UCC). This institution held the state of Oregon’s first viticulture and enology program outside the Willamette Valley.
The aim of the institution is to help grow Oregon’s rich wine industry as well as the economy in the expanding wine region. The SOWI offers programs such as living laboratory of student-cultivated vineyards, commercial-scale winemaking facility, private testing facility to serve all regional winemakers, wine incubator to help artisans plan, start and market their wineries and save the significant costs of starting a winery, event center for conferences, meetings and receptions.
In 2008, Danny Lang, an attorney specialized in personal injury cases, donated $800,000 to SOWI which was then used to build the Danny Lang Teaching, Learning and Event Center. Construction finished in 2012.
