Scope and content

Amongst the memorabilia and ephemera of the Linfield Upward Bound Collection, there are significant numbers of candid photos and slides documenting the 42-year history of the grant-run program at the Linfield campus. Because this program was federally run and supported, there are numerous grant application materials and fact- books pertaining to intricacies of federal TRIO program policies. This collection also contains examples of student work, articles documenting Upward Bound successes and scrapbooks compiled during the Upward Bound program’s presence at the Linfield campus.

General note

Summary: Documents and photos detailing the Upward Bound TRIO program at Linfield College.

General note

Historical Note: One of several federal TRIO programs, the Linfield Upward Bound program commenced in 1970 and ran until 2012. This and other programs like it were designed to help low-income, minority and first-generation students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education. Operating through seven school districts, Linfield Upward Bound was the second-oldest such project in Oregon. Upward Bound served the community by providing year-round tutoring, counseling, career exploration, financial aid application assistance, a six-week summer college preparatory residence and many other aids. In its last decade or so, the institution became more focused on providing assistance to high-risk Hispanic students in need of English Language Learning programs.
